Aluminium production: hot and cold mill

Hot and cold mill can be used in aluminium production. This process is the basis for producing aluminium coils, sheet and foil in different alloys and dimensions, adapting the product to customer’s needs. Aluminium semi-finished products can be used to manufacture many finished products for a wide range of applications in industrial, building, HVAC and mechanical sectors. Aluminium is a barrier against oxygen and light but keeps lightness and flexibility.

The difference between hot and cold mill 

The thickness of aluminium coils is obtained with a rolling mill. Hot mill means rolling the metal at a temperature high enough to avoid strain-hardening. Rolling temperature also influences the appearance and structure of the final product. Processing aluminium through a cold mill helps reduce thickness, increase strength and improve the surface finish. The aluminium slab is processed until it reaches the requested thickness and technical features.

In 2014 Laminazione Sottile installed the new Mino intermediate cold mill which has the capability to roll strips of different aluminium alloys, including 5xxx series, up to the maximum strip width of 1800 mm, down to a minimum thickness of 0.1 mm. In addition, Mino Cold Mill is one of the most powerful and productive aluminium cold mill running in Europe.
