How many types of multilayer pipes are there?
Multilayer pipes are a versatile and reliable solution for many applications, including heating, cooling and drinking water distribution networks. Their composite structure combines the advantages of polymeric and metallic materials, ensuring high performance in terms of mechanical resistance, flexibility and durability. According to the UNI EN ISO 21003 regulation, there are mainly two categories of multilayer pipes: Multilayer M-pipes and Multilayer P-pipes.
Multilayer M-pipes
Multilayer M-pipes are made up of five overlapping layers:
- Inner layer: made of polymeric material, such as cross-linked polyethylene (PE-X) or high temperature resistant polyethylene (PE-RT), which ensures non-toxicity and a smooth surface to reduce pressure drops.
- Adhesive layer: ensures adhesion between the inner layer and the metal layer.
- Metal layer: generally made of welded aluminum, it offers mechanical resistance, impermeability to oxygen and reduced thermal expansion
- Adhesive layer: ensures adhesion between the metal layer and the external layer.
- External layer: made of polymeric material, it protects the pipe from external agents and provides flexibility.
This composition makes M-pipes ideal for drinking water distribution systems and heating systems, thanks to their resistance to high pressures and temperatures.
Multilayer P-pipes
Multilayer P-pipes are composed exclusively of polymer layers and are divided into two main types:
- 3-layer pipes: they include an internal layer of polymer material, an adhesive layer and an external layer with an oxygen barrier in vinyl material (EVOH).
- 5-layer pipes: they have a sequence of internal polymer layer, adhesive layer, EVOH barrier, adhesive layer and external polymer layer.
P-pipes are appreciated for their lightness, flexibility and resistance to corrosion, making them suitable for underfloor heating systems and water distribution systems.
